Wallace Hall pupils take an active part in thanking the NHS

Children of key workers attending Wallace Hall during the Coronavirus lockdown have been making good use of their time in school by creating a rainbow tribute to our fantastic NHS workers.

The rainbow has been made from bricks that were dug out of our school allotment. The children then carefully painted the bricks in lovely bright colours and then placed these in a rainbow shape, adding the final touch of the NHS logo into the middle to show their appreciation for all of the NHS staff who have been doing a brilliant job in keeping us all safe. As well as the garden rainbow, the children have been busy painting rainbows on stones they have collected while out walking and creating and painting rainbow pictures. The stones and the pictures have been delivered round the community to people living alone or who have lost loved ones.

During the lockdown, gardening has also been on the curriculum with the children planting and nurturing various seeds and plants. As these seedlings have grown, under the capable supervision of Wilma Marchbank and Hazel Harvey, they have been transferred into our freshly dug over and cleared allotment and into some raised beds which have been made from recycled pallets.

Other projects that have been organised by our terrific volunteer staff have included PE and fitness sessions, baking and cooking, sewing and some science activities.

Barry Graham, Headteacher at Wallace Hall, commented: “I was really touched by the fantastic rainbow that our children created in our school garden. It is a tangible reminder that staff in the NHS are putting their health at risk on a daily basis to keep us all safe and I am delighted that the children have been thinking of the NHS staff as well as the more vulnerable people in our wider community.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to reiterate my thanks to all of the staff who have been keeping Wallace Hall going during the Covid-19 crisis, whether this be through coming into school to provide these fantastic activities for our young people, staffing our main office, delivering food boxes, learning packs and ICT equipment to our young people, posting work on our Learning Hub or on Microsoft Teams, designing and manufacturing PPE or through ensuring that parental communication and queries are dealt with as quickly and effectively as possible. It has been a real team effort from all Wallace Hall staff – thank you.”
