Young Ambassadors lead the way

Finlay Bainbridge, our Head Boy, and Josie Blount, our Head Girl, travelled to Hampden recently to take part in the Young Ambassador 2019 conference. The Young Ambassadors’ programme is funded by the National Lottery and is a key element of sportscotland’s contribution to developing young people as leaders in sport. Each year, two pupils from each secondary school in Scotland are chosen as Young Ambassadors to promote sport, and motivate and inspire other young people to get involved in sport in their schools, clubs and local communities.

The programme helps young people make a meaningful and important contribution as leaders of sport in their school, and offers opportunities for leadership roles which reflect their interests and abilities. Finlay and Josie spent some time at the conference learning about their new role and getting advice on how they will achieve their aspirations and goals in Wallace Hall.

Josie said: “We got some great ideas at the training and we are both looking forward to sharing these ideas with the pupils of Wallace Hall. One key element we hope to take forward is forming a sports committee where pupils and staff can get together and talk about how to encourage participation in sports and health and wellbeing activities. It was great to ‘bounce off’ ideas with lots of other young ambassadors from schools across Scotland.”

Finlay added: “Some of the time was spent in groups where we took part in teambuilding exercises and group discussions. We were given a list of scenarios and role play activities which taught us how to effectively engage young people in sport. At the end of the day, we were introduced to Ross Murdoch who was a Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medal winner. Ross is a great role model for any young, aspiring athlete and it was a real privilege to meet him.”
