The Balance between School and College Life

Sixth year of high school can mean a lot of things to many people. For some it means cramming in those last few Highers before going to university; some students are studying at Advanced Higher level; others are learning life skills such as Home Economics to survive life away from home.

For myself, it has been different again. This year I have been split between Wallace Hall Academy, Dumfries and Galloway College and working part time. Two days a week I study computer science at the college, Wednesday to Friday is spent in school learning Higher Maths and Design and Technology then at the weekend I work a 9-5 job at the hospital. It’s safe to say that my S6 year is very busy.

My lecturers and class teachers have been very supportive throughout this experience by providing class notes to catch up with and giving time outside of class for study support. However, it is a challenge to keep on top of balancing college work and school work.

My sixth year has been very full but I believe my schedule incorporating school, college and work has been really beneficial. I have learned the importance of good time management and how to learn independently and I believe this has prepared me well for the next steps in my education.
